One writer on the Inscribe list recently posed a question that generated a flurry of replies. She asked us what would be a good Christmas gift to give a writer. Some members suggested note pads and pencils while others suggested e-book readers or voice-recognition software. I chimed in by saying that all I wanted for Christmas was to be left alone. That generated even more responses. Why would I, or anybody, want to be without the company of family and friends on such a festive occasion?

Most children spend a few hours each October 31st happily going from house to house trick-or-treating. That pleasant pastime was withheld from me in 1964 when I found myself 500 miles from home in a boarding school. From my
Deliverance From Jericho (Six Years in a Blind School)…

I've received two official reviews for Eden's Hell, which is Book I to a five novel series. My first book signing was Friday, October 23, 2009. I actually sold out of 30 printed copies and have ordered more. I can only hope they will arrive before this Friday, or I will have to reschedule. What a huge success, and the staff at Coles Books are the absolute best!

To adults, a tree is just a tree. It's something to plant, trim, pick fruit from, or cut down as desired. When I was seven, I became extremely fond of one. in my
Deliverance From Jericho (Six Years in a Blind School) memoir, I explained why this decorative landscape item became a source of comfort for me.…

Several months ago, the distributor for my novel Dead Witness, Nancy Wise from Sandhill Book Marketing, suggested I contact Theytus Books about publishing my novel Broken But Not Dead. I did. And last Saturday, October 17, I signed a contract. Note the gigantic smile on my face:

It's official!
Coming Home, a sequel to my first novel,
In Sunshine or in Shadow, will be published by Highland Press!
I don't have a release date yet, but I will say that the story revolves around Ashleen O'Brien, daughter of a village girl and step-daughter of an Irish landlord, and her stormy, passionate romance with Cavan Callaghan, hero of the Irish Brigade.
Can these two very different people find love? And more importantly, can their love survive the ghosts of a past that…

Blind and visually-impaired children are just as mischievous as their sighted peers. I amply demonstrated this in my
Deliverance From Jericho (Six Years in a Blind School) memoir. During my first term at the institution, I perpetually ran afoul of both supervisors and teachers. The following excerpt is j…

A number of months ago, I was contacted by a young Director, fresh out of film school, Faizan Sheikh. Faizan had an idea for a short film that he wanted to film in New York, and asked if I would mind giving him a hand.
I was intrigued by his idea, and the concept behind his story, and after speaking with him on the telephone, when I could actually hear the passion he had inside of him for his story, I knew then that I had to help this young Director.
Together we worked on the script, writing it…

Vacations are a time of fun and relaxation but they can also help your writing career. I discovered this fact as I worked on my upcoming memoir, How I Was Razed. The journal that I kept brought back details that I had forgotten. As I read it decades later, I kept saying, "Ah yes," as I turned the pages. Me…

The Inscribe writers group recently had a contest where participants wrote a 300-word paragraph on a cat attacking something. The words "hiss," "pounce," and "scratched" were not to be used in it. The exercise evoked a long-ago memory and I set to work on my entry that day. Here's what I came up with.…
