Book launch and fundraiser to save the A Frame House at It was in Memorial Park, Brighton, Ontario
August 11, 2009 from 6pm to 7pm
This event has already taken place, August 2, 2009. However, the importance of this book launch should not end with the one-day event in the park in Brighton, Ontario. The anthology of poems, essays, and letters about Al Purdy will continue as a f...

Hi Caroline You've made a very elegant case for the importance of both writing 'community' and Associations: perhaps the most we can hope for is a table of talented, impassioned and generous-hearted people like you and Carol, from which to develo...

The idea of "poetry community" is full of promise. How good it would be if artists and writers felt secure enough to share their thoughts without prejudice in circles of creativity. Sad to say, this doesn't happen often. There is a human tendency ...

Thanks to you both! But it isn't hard at all to see the merit in someone's writing: if it's sincere work, begun with a little will and determination, applause is due (as Pope says). I don't believe in (nor will I ever subscribe to) poetry Associa...

I agree, Caroline, about Conrad's replies. It always makes me marvel at how much he sees in someone else's poems. I know that Conrad has pointed out things about my efforts that I did not even know were there! Such insight and depth of analysis in...

Caroline, following T.S.Eliot, I believe that the purpose of 'criticism' is to discuss intelligently, and respectfully, what is perceived to be the writer's end, leaving the reader with the final judgement (favourable or not)I haven't encountered...

You are right about the early spark for poets and writers. As a teacher, you must have watched students begin to understand their own gifts. What a miracle that is! I've seen it as a parent. Also, I believe that every human being has some capacity...

Carol, those poems in a drawer (like Emily Dickinson's) set the pattern for what followed, whether you were conscious of it or not. If Dickinson's poems had been thrown away (and they almost were), would she still have been a great poet? Of cours...

Oh, I agree, Conrad. But I didn't really claim the title poet until lately. Before that I just "wrote poems"...lol And for the most part they stayed in the dark in a drawer... I do regret that I did not have the courage earlier in life to act like...

Carol, Wallace Stevens, Sophocles, Blake, William Carolos Williams, Tristan Tsara, etc were all ostensibly writers known primarily for their mature work; their juvenilia have been of more interest to editors or doctoral candidates. But, of course...

Hello again, Carol, Isn't it amazing what the young writers/ slam poets are doing these days! I found it perfectly appropriate that Alberta named a 23-year old rap artist as Poet Laureate. I've only seen a few of his works, but he is very talented...

Hi, Carolyn! Well to start with your last question: No, I don't think Canadian poets get the exposure they deserve, but I am not sure that it is only Canadian poets. I think poets worldwide need more recognition for what they contribute to culture...

Caroline, I believe, too, that poetry is an ancient art form; in fact, it seems to have sprung from this urge to give music, that predates verbal expression, to that terrible chaos and randomness of life itself. As an art form it imposes its own ...
